PEAFOWL GENETICS....PAGE 2
|
|
Like the Incomplete dominant white gene 'T', Pied 'P' is also Id.
To get a pied, two genes are involved. The white 'T' gene and another 'P' pied gene.
Some folks think there are 'micro' genes that affect the amount of 'white' in the pied bird.
Others believe that there are multiple copies of 'P' and 'T'.
Either way, some pieds show more white than others.
There are many 'pied' birds.
Blue, black shoulder, purple, silver, cameo....and on and on and on.
On this page we will only worry about the india blue pieds and their alleles (opposites).
It is the simplest method, and will help you in explaining the others.
|
|
|
|
The pied gene 'P' is a mutation of the pattern gene 'B', more commonly known as the India blue.
'P' is an allele (opposite) of the white mutation.
Just as the black shoulder is an allele, (BB vs. bb) so is the pied gene opposite to white.
blue is opposite to black shoulder (BB vs. bb)
white is opposite to pied. (TT vs. PP)
So, are you totally confused? Understandably so...
Let's go figure it out.
|
|
First clue= TP = pied

|
|
So, what's this PP thing you say?
PP, dark pied will look like BT, india blue
with the white flight feathers or throat patch.
So, if you raise both, you'd better tag these.
They will become important down the page.

Some folks find this to be the best of all combinations.
You get pieds and whites without having to keep and
feed 2 separate pairs.
Or, if you lose one, (dread the thought) you can quickly
replace it. |

There's that PP again.
So what are they good for?
We'll show you below.

In all of the above matings, it doesn't matter which color is male or which color is female.
The formulas work either way.
|
|
PIEDS AND BLACK SHOULDERS
|
|
These are a bit more complicated since we are dealing with 2 Id genes (P and T) the India blue
which is carried as a pattern gene (I) and as a color gene (B) and also recessive bb (black shoulder)
But, once you've got one, you indeed have something special.

PIBb= 1 Pied, 1 blue pattern, 1 blue color, 1 b.s.
All these will look india blue

Next, we will mate birds from that first mating. Yes, we are going to mate brother and sister.
There are 3 things we can do here. TIBb X TIBb--PIBb X PIBb--TIBb X PIBb

There are hundreds of additional crosses you could do with all of the birds produced above.
Play around, and see what you can create.
